In fact, both are widely used in harsh environments. But their differences in heat and corrosion resistance, as well as other aspects, will play a decisive role in your choice. Let’s start to look at the differences in detail now.
The Differences Between Duplex 2205 and 316 Stainless Steel
Chemical Composition
316 stainless steel belongs to austenitic stainless steel. Its main components are chromium (16-18%) and nickel (10-14%), with 2-3% molybdenum added. This composition gives it better corrosion resistance than 304.
Duplex 2205 is a duplex stainless steel. The term “duplex” in its name refers to its microstructure – approximately half ferrite and half austenite. Its chromium content is higher (22-23%), while the nickel content (4.5-6.5%) is lower than that of 316. However, it contains about 3% molybdenum and around 0.15% nitrogen.
Please note that nitrogen is the key ingredient in the composition. It can not only enhance strength but also significantly improve resistance to local corrosion.
Mechanical Properties
This is the most intuitive difference between the two.
The duplex 2205 is almost twice as strong as the 316. Its yield strength is usually above 450 MPa, while 316 is only around 220 MPa. What does this mean? Using 2205 can reduce thin wall thickness, reduce weight, but also can withstand higher pressure.
If the equipment needs to bear weight or the design aims to save materials, the advantage of 2205 is more obvious.
Corrosion Resistance
The corrosion resistance of 316 is good enough for most conventional environments. Its strength is against common corrosion and pitting. Especially in chloride-containing environments, 316 is more resistant than 304.
However, duplex 2205 outperforms 316 in this regard. Its pitting equivalent (PREN) is usually above 33, while that of 316 is only around 24. To put it simply, in chlorinated environments, seawater, and acidic media, 2205 will last longer and have a lower probability of problems.
So, like in chemical and ocean engineering, where corrosive conditions and harsh conditions prevail, duplex 2205 is a more secure choice.
Heat Resistance
Austenitic stainless steel, such as 316, is preferred for high-temperature applications. 316 is stable at high temperatures and has good oxidation resistance. Its long-term operating temperature can reach around 800°C. But it stays in the 450-850°C range for too long, making it easy to precipitate carbide, which then affects corrosion resistance.
The heat resistance of duplex 2205 is relatively weaker. Its operating temperature generally does not exceed 300°C. When the temperature is too high, brittle phase transformation occurs in the duplex structure, making the material brittle. Therefore, if the equipment operates continuously at high temperature, 316 is more suitable.
Cost
The price of duplex 2205 is higher than that of 316. The material cost is approximately 30-50% higher. But the account cannot only calculate the unit price.
Because duplex 2205 has high strength, the thick 316 plate can be replaced with a thinner one, reducing the total amount. In some cases, overall manufacturing costs are flat or even lower. Additionally, its service life is longer and maintenance frequency is lower. When calculated over the entire life cycle, it is often more cost-effective.
Applications
The two applications focus on different aspects.

These applications require corrosion resistance, but not to an extreme degree. 316 is sufficient, and the cost is also controllable.
